Concept and Leadership Styles

Leadership is the capacity or ability of a person to influence, induce, encourage or motivate others to carry out certain objectives, enthusiastically and willingly.

In the case of a company, leadership is often applied to a person belonging to a particular hierarchical level to another in a lower hierarchical level, for example, the owner of the business to its employees, or a supervisor or boss to his subordinates.

But leadership can and should be applied between workers belonging to the same hierarchical level, for example, the leadership that provides a proactive and enthusiastic worker to his companions.

Let’s look at the main types or styles of leadership that can be taken, and then some recommendations on which one to use.

Leadership Styles

There are basically three types or styles of leadership: authoritarian leadership, democratic leadership and liberal leadership:

Authoritarian leadership

This type of leadership style is based on dominant by the leader, it tends to take decisions without the participation of their subordinates, and without having to justify them.

The authoritarian leader is characterized as dominant, restrictive, demanding obedience and constantly monitors their workers.

Democratic Leadership

In this type of leadership, the leader seeking to be a member of the group or team, decisions are usually taken from the workers, but under the supervision, guidance and consent of the leader.

The democratic leader is characterized by listening to members of their group, be friendly, accessible, help workers with personal problems, show consideration and concern for others, to promote inclusiveness and to be permissive.

Liberal Leadership

This type of leadership is based on a minimum participation of the leader, it gives complete freedom in decision-making group or individual, or in any case, their participation in decisions is limited, for example, has some sketches of what to do But he added that provide additional information only if requested.

What style of leadership

Under a purely authoritarian leadership, it is possible to achieve more work, but at the cost of generating power, lack of spontaneity and initiative among workers, besides the fact that work often develops only when the leader is present.

Under a purely liberal leadership, poor results are usually obtained in terms of quality and quantity, in addition to the tasks usually develop at random and generally waste time, for example, and in personal discussions not related to the work itself.

Only in a democratic leadership, the production level is not usually equal to that of workers under authoritarian leadership, but the quality of work is usually higher, in addition, under this leadership, workers often show greater efficiency, greater creativity, communication, responsibility and commitment.

Adopt a democratic leadership appears to be the best choice of the three, however, in practice this is not correct, and we need to implement the three types of leadership, according to the situation that is being given to persons to lead , and the task or work that is to be enforced.

Sometimes we have to be authoritarian and enforce the orders, others, encourage participation and consult with our staff before making decisions, and in others, we will take them themselves.

We must show strong leadership and by example, when tasks are routine and repetitive, indiscipline when workers are not doing their job, or when a worker repeatedly making mistakes or failures.

Democratic leadership we must show, for example, when workers are doing their job, and business is growing steadily.

And we must show a democratic leadership, for example, a worker who shows a high level of efficiency and accountability.
